Council Post: 12 Ways To Keep Remote Workers Engaged In The Business’s Culture

Converting your company’s structure from an in-office workplace to one that offers hybrid flexibility or remote work may only seem like a smart economical solution to cut costs, but it can also have unintended effects on company culture. To ensure the change is positive, it’s important to not lose sight of the importance of team-building. This is especially true when it comes to engaging recent graduates who are new to the full-time working environment or career transitioners who may need additional support as they launch their careers in a new industry.

Below are 12 tips from Forbes Human Resources Council members to help department leaders ensure that their remote workers feel included in their company’s culture.

1. Schedule A Coffee Hour With The CEO

We developed a weekly meeting called “Afternoon Coffee with the CEO.” It’s open to all staff via Teams and our CEO runs it for 30 minutes. During the meeting, we introduce new staff members and then ask the staff on the call to shoutout their colleagues if they had a great experience or just want to say thank you. Leaders must have a deliberate way to ensure there is clear meeting etiquette around everyone being heard. 3. Lead By Example

In remote or hybrid work environments, it’s crucial for department leaders to lead by example. When interacting with employees across all geographies, simplicity is key. Turn on your camera during meetings, use messaging platforms for quick and informal hellos or participate in virtual or in-person events. 4. Set Expectations Around Deliverables And Company Values

Although remote work has become a large part of the work culture, an organization’s culture is not defined by remote work. Therefore, leaders must be intentional about managing their remote workers. Set clear KPIs, assess staff based on their deliverables, establish clear company values and touch base regularly with staff. In addition, organize virtual meetings, virtual social events and online gym activities. This worked really well in my organization during the Covid lockdown. – Awuese Oku, African Development Bank

5. Develop Opportunities For Professional Development And Recognition

Rather than fitting remote workers into a strategy designed for in-person employees, leaders should strive to cultivate a culture that works for everyone. Leaders can partner with HR to create a program that prioritizes continuous professional development, and frequent check-ins, in addition to regularly recognizing employees and fostering an engaging culture that unifies the department and the entire organization. – Jennifer Reimert, Workhuman

6. Cultivate A DEI-Focused Work Atmosphere

Department heads can ensure remote employees don’t feel excluded by cultivating an environment that welcomes the global cultures represented in the organization’s remote workforce. 7. Let Remote Workers Lead A Project

Remote workers need opportunities to step into leadership roles, especially if it is a hybrid workforce. When remote employees take the lead on a project or presentation, they will grow more engaged in the culture as they take pride in meeting their goals and building relationships with coworkers. 8. Prioritize One-On-One Personal Check-Ins

Spend focused one-on-one time building connections with direct reports that go beyond the nuts and bolts of work projects. Get to really know your direct report as a person. 9. Offer Flexibility And Diverse Communication Platforms

10. Prioritize Meeting Established Behavior Expectations

Every leader needs to make it a priority to “take the values on the wall and bring them into the hall.” This is done best by modeling the expected behavior, and this can be done through every interaction with people in the company, be it in person, through video or in an email. 11. Use Collaboration Tools To Hold Team Meetings

Hold all team meetings via collaboration tools such as Teams or Zoom with everyone attending from their desk. This provides an equal playing field so that those who are remote do not feel left out or unable to participate in the meetings. 12. Stay Committed To Improving Your Remote Culture

Being committed to building a remote culture is key. After that, do monthly team activities together that are fun and not just all-hands meetings or updates. Work on strengthening relationships. Send handwritten notes of thanks and appreciation. Start your team meetings with a fun get-to-know-you question.
